Dear All,
I am writing just to keep you updated on what we have been doing and futher actions following the Belarusian Presidential elections on 19 March.
Press release:
We issued a press release on 22 March, expressing AI's concerns about the detentions and beatings of demonstrators protesting following the election results - see AI Index: EUR 49/003/006.
Webaction with petition:
As of today, there is a webaction on Belarus on the homepage of the AI website (www.amnesty.org), raising AI's concerns about the exessive use of force by the security forces during post-election demonstrations. The webpage has a link to Radio Liberty's photographs of the demonstrations and a link to a petition, set up by one of our German members, addressed to President Lukashenka and calling for the immediate and unconditional release of all those who have been detained for exercising their right to freedom of assembly, association and expression. Please ask people to sign this petition immediately, which will be forwarded to President Lukashenka shortly. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ARTICLE ON THE HOMEPAGE WILL NOT BE UP FOR MORE THAN A WEEK SO PLEASE ACT NOW!
Letter to President Lukashenka:
We may include a copy of the petition in our upcoming correspondence with President Lukashenka, in which we will expess all of AI's concerns as he begins his third term.
Letter to the Minister of the Interior:
We have written a letter to Minister of the Interior expressing our concern about the large numbers of people who have been detained and given sentences under the administrative code of between 4 and 15 days. We have called for their immediate and unconditional release. We will not be calling the hundreds who have been detained prisoners of conscience as we have no independent means of verifying each and every situation.
We will continue to monitor the situation and keep you updated of any further actions.
Best wishes,
Aisha
